Ornamental Mulch

This is collection of watercolors links common organic objects and decorative pattern. I find it funny and sentimental to formally decorate twigs and leaves which would be normally swept away. On my walks through Watertown and Cambridge I collected each object and painted it from life. Then I add patterns around the original painting. Many were inspired by ceiling tiles, historical mosaics and oriental rugs. Other patterns were taken from the shapes in the objects themselves. As I worked on the series I felt a connection to the seasons. I was completely dependent on chance as I foraged for new objects to paint. The weather influenced my choice of color too. As a result a seasonal element grew within the series unexpectedly. From this work I learned to see the character of each day and take more notice of what the wind blows at my feet.

Leadership for Girls

This collection of paintings illustrates a book for the Girl Scouts in Arizona. The natural objects depict metaphors for their leadership programs. Mature deep green leaves cup delicate wild flowers to reflect the supportive relationship between Girl Scout elders and teens. Peer support groups of all ages translated into images of, circling flowers, interlocking clover and balancing stones. The simple still life images reinforced the spirit of their programs that involve a very diverse group of members from across the state.
